3 things that we can do NOW with 5G

What can we do NOW with 5G? This is a question that many have been asking, especially when deciding to make the move to 5G or to stay with 4G. Well, the biggest advantage of mobile 5G networks is the incredibly fast Internet speed. Unfortunately, most people believe that there isn't enough content or services that actually need those 5G speeds.

But is that really true? A quick search online indicates the opposite as there are actually quite a few things that take advantage of those 5G speeds. In addition, it is also making it possible for us to do things that used to require powerful mobile devices or computers. Today, let's take a look at 3 things that we can do NOW with 5G.

#1 Gaming

The first one will have to be cloud gaming or game streaming. In fact, it's already available in Malaysia. Recently, Yes 5G launched the beta test for its cloud gaming service based on Nvidia's GeForce Now service.

You can check out our first impressions of the service here but the short answer is that YES, you can play some pretty good AAA games via the cloud gaming service, even here in Malaysia. Granted, you would need to have an EA/Steam account and a controller/keyboard on hand for some games but your actual device no longer needs to be a powerful Gaming PC to play them.

This is actually a 5G phone with a controller attachment. Cool, right?

For the most part, games should run smoothly if the 5G connection is fast enough, so this also means that you would only be able to game in areas with good 5G coverage. This becomes less of a concern as 5G networks expand, but it certainly means that there's a viable use case scenario to move to 5G, especially if you're a gamer.

#2 3D Rendering

Yup, you read that right. You can now render 3D objects on the cloud! This is great for people who want to save time, or only need to do it for a one-off project and would rather not have to buy an expensive computer for it.

These days, you can find these "render farms" on the Internet to render CGI, 3D models, architectural designs, and more. And with 5G, you can download the resulting large files even while on the go. Of course, you'll need a device that's 5G-capable for faster downloads. But that's certainly another way mobile 5G networks can be useful.

Most render farms support popular software like Maya, 3ds Max, Blender, and more

#3 Video Rendering

If you can render 3D objects/animation on the cloud, it only stands to reason that you can do the same for video rendering. To be specific, you can render things like visual effects, high-end transitions, and cinematic titles on render farms. Some of them even support After Effects, which is convenient if you don't have a long-term need to subscribe to Adobe.

Another use case for cloud video rendering is when you want to save time. Let's say you have a decent PC or laptop to edit videos, but the rendering process takes forever. Getting a top-of-the-line PC might not be a sensible solution either, especially if it's not something you need to do often, or you don't have the cash. In that case, cloud video rendering becomes a much more viable alternative.

Don't have time or processing power on your PC? Send your AE video to the cloud!

Moreover, you can send a video to render on the cloud while you do other things. Once the video is done rendering, you can download it even when you're on the go. With 5G, the file won't even take long to finish downloading. The only thing you'll have to worry about is your data cap (lol) but if you're using 5G, we'd recommend going for the unlimited data plans.

What, "that all sounds more like cloud technology than anything 5G-related"? Well... you're not exactly wrong but 5G remains the main enabler for making these services both viable and above all timely.

What else can the cloud and 5G offer us?

Eventually, 5G will enable such things as self driving cars or fully connected Smart homes utilizing the Internet of Things. With such game streaming, app streaming, rendering streaming and so forth available through 5G, most of us may not need to have such powerful devices anymore, just a more portable 5G tablet with FHD+ resolution.

Even 4K gaming with just your Smart TV might become a possibility. Again, we'd have to wait for 5G networks to fully expand properly, but the time that 5G dictates how our devices may be made and designed isn't that far off at all.
