At the start of the year, many of us were hoping to get 5G access by the middle of the year. However, progress stalled as local telcos clamoured to have a piece of the pie. Now, it looks like things are finally proceeding so we could enjoy 5G soon. In fact, Malacca should be able to have decent 5G coverage by next month.

According to Bernama, 40 out of 133 locations in Malacca will gain access to 5G by the end of September 2022. These locations are all part of the phase 1 implementation and are centred around Ayer Keroh and Bandar Melaka. Datuk Rais Yasin, Malacca's EXCO for State Education and Technology, confirmed that the locations were selected based on high population density or focused on industry, tourism, and higher education institutions.

In other words, the 5G coverage isn't just for us to enjoy fast mobile Internet. Datuk Rais also mentioned that it would enable applications like AI surveillance and IoT sensors. These 5G systems will be used to increase security or improve transportation. These sensors will be "integrated through the smart lamppost infrastructure that houses the 5G network", said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Sulaiman Md Ali.

Industry experts claim that up to 30% of populated areas in Malaysia would get 5G access by mid-September. That's just about 3 weeks to go, so it might be a good time to start looking for a new 5G smartphone. Which model would you get to enjoy 5G?
