In earlier news we reported on an affordable 7.9-inch tablet by Acer that may become a game changer or at least provide a better alternative to those looking for a cheaper Android tablet. Well, the Acer Iconia A1 has finally appeared in leaks confirming many of the tech specs including:

  • A 7.9-inch IPS screen (1024 x 768 pixels)
  • 1.2ghz MediaTek MT8125 (4-core, Cortex-A9)
  • 1GB RAM
  • 8GB/16GB storage
  • PowerVR SGX
  • Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0
  • 5MP auto-focus rear camera, 1080p video + VGA front camera
  • GPS, accelerometer, gyroscope, 3.5mm jack, MicroSD card slot, Micro USB 2.0
  • 3250 mAh battery
  • 11.10 mm (thickness)
  • 460 grams

Set for release by end of June 2013, the Iconia A1 may be priced from $169 (RM515). If treated right with an optimized Android 4.2 experience the device could be great, however, early hands-on reviews have revealed performance on par with similarly specified quad-core China-brand tablets which range from RM330 to RM500. While we're hoping this is just because it hasn't been officially released yet, Acer is not generally known for their optimized software. Regardless, it should offer budget alternative tablet choices for most consumers.
