All four iPhone 16 models could use the same A18 chipset

For two years in a row, Apple has differentiated between the non-pro and pro variants with a different chipset. In case you have forgotten, the non-pro would equip the previous flagship chipset while the latter would use the latest one. However, that could change for the iPhone 16 series this year.

According to Nicolás Alvare, he discovered a code and claimed that Apple would release all four iPhone 16 models with the same A18 chipset. From his tweet, here's a comparison with the codes he found and the iPhone 15 series:

  • iPhone17,1
  • iPhone17,2
  • iPhone17,3
  • iPhone17,4
  • iPhone17,5

  • ‌iPhone 15‌ - ‌iPhone 15‌,4
  • ‌iPhone 15‌ Plus - ‌iPhone 15‌,5
  • iPhone 15 Pro - ‌iPhone 16‌,1
  • ‌iPhone 15 Pro‌ Max - ‌iPhone 16‌,2

As you can see, the first five rows of the iPhones have the same starting number - 17 -, whereas the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus have the number 15 and the rest goes on. The iPhone 15 Pro variants are using the A17 Pro chipset, so the identifier is set at 16,x. With this, it makes sense for the rest to have the respective identifiers.

This is not the first time that a rumour that all the iPhone 16 models will have the same chipset. Back in March, sources have also seen the same code leaks with the same identifiers. While it's great to know that all the models will have the same chipset, the performance may differ. Apple could prioritise higher-core performance for the pro variants to set them apart from the non-pro ones.

Also, there are five iPhones listed in the code, one of them could very well be an iPhone SE which makes sense. Apple Intelligence is coming very soon on iOS 18 and will only be available on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max due to the memory and chipset limitation. With that, everyone should enjoy Apple Intelligence on the iPhone 16 series.
