Apple could finally upgrade the cameras in the iPhone 14 Pro after using a 12MP sensor since 2015

Reliable tipster and reputable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo is at it again by spilling the beans on the tech giant’s upcoming devices. This time around, Kuo’s aim is directed towards the upcoming iPhone 14 Pro, whereby the leaker gave an explanation as to why the upcoming device would have a larger camera bump.

According to Kuo, the iPhone 14 Pro would have a more prominent rear-camera bump because Apple is upgrading the camera to 48MP. In case you didn’t know, Apple has been featuring only a 12MP sensor on its iPhone cameras throughout the last 7 years, since the iPhone 6s way back in 2015.

Previously, we shared an alleged leaked schematic and renders of the iPhone 14 Pro series which showed a more protruding rear camera bump than the one found in the iPhone 13 Pro series. This is corroborated by Kuo who said that the diagonal length of the iPhone’s contact image censor (CIS) is set to increase by to 25 to 35 percent because of the jump to 48MP.

Kuo also said that the height of the lens system will also increase by 5 to 10 percent. Furthermore, based on the leaked schematic, only the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max will have a bigger camera bump, hence it is likely that only the Pro models this year will get the jump to 48MP.

So, what’s so special about a 48MP camera system? Well, other than having more natural bokeh for your photos, a large 48MP sensor also allows for 8K video shooting. In fact, several smartphones in the Android world has already introduced this feature in the past 3 year or so, most notably Samsung.

If the iPhone 14 Pro were to allow 8k video shooting and in ProRes format (as first introduced in the iPhone 13 Pro series), you’re definitely gonna need way too much storage on that device. I mean, 1TB probably won’t be enough!

However, do take all these information with a grain of salt. Even though Kuo has been consistently correct in the past, this is still just a rumour and nothing is confirmed as of yet.
