The iPhone 12 is still a ways to go but it seems Apple may have plans to experiment using some new tech. Sources claim that the iPhone 12 may come with support for the new wireless-AY (802.11ay) standard, despite the fact that it wouldn't be ready till the end of 2020.

According to 9to5Mac (via Macotakara), the new rumour says that Apple's upcoming flagship smartphone could support WiFi 802.11ay, which uses the 60GHz spectrum for high-bandwidth data transfer. If you're familiar with the typical 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands on a wireless router, you would know that the range for the 5GHz band isn't that large. With 60GHz, the range is expected to be even shorter, suitable only for transferring data from one device to another in close range.

From the descriptions, it sounds like the technology will be like Bluetooth, except it would be able to transfer at a much faster speed. Considering that, it could also mean that 802.11ay would be a good substitute for Bluetooth in data transfers or connections. It could also be the ideal technology for Apple to upgrade the speed of AirDrop transfers.

As you likely have guessed, there hasn't been any official announcements on this so do take the rumour with a grain of salt. Nevertheless, it'll be interesting to see what smartphones can do with this technology. For more future news on the upcoming iPhone 12, stay tuned to TechNave.com.
