Apple is reportedly planning to ditch the SIM card slot on its iPhones and instead only provide support for eSIM. In fact, the company may even release an eSIM-only iPhone 14 series model for certain regions this September.

As reported by the Wall Street Journal, the tech giant reportedly told major telco carriers in the United States to prepare for an eSIM-only iPhone later this year. However, the move to remove the SIM card slot by Apple will be gradual rather than something drastic such as how the company removed the 3.5mm audio jack.

Apple started introducing eSIM technology on its smartphones with the iPhone XS in 2018. The iPhone 13 series released last year even supports dual eSIM cards at the same time, hence traditional SIM cards are becoming more redundant by the day.

This is even more so, given how most telco companies in Europe and Asia are now offering eSIM options more ubiquitously, even for prepaid plans. Furthermore, some Android phones have even discarded the SIM card slot in the past, way earlier than Apple’s alleged plan this year.
