Apple’s controversial move of not including chargers and EarPods when you purchase an iPhone drew the flake of many when it was first announced back in 2020. In fact, a lot of rival companies even poked fun and mocked the decision through various ads, most notably Samsung.
However, 2 years on, it seems that not including chargers with smartphone purchases has become the new industry standard practice. In fact, most of the major smartphone manufacturers have been doing the same or planning to do so in the future.
While Apple claims that the move was in order to cut waste and claimed that it would reduce annual carbon emissions by 2 million tonnes, there is another ‘green’ reason why Apple did this: money. Lots and lots of money!
According to a report by the Daily Mail, the move by Apple to not include chargers and EarPods in the box has indirectly made even more money for the tech giant. A whopping USD6.5 BILLION or ~RM27.2 BILLION to be exact!
An iPhone charger costs RM99 on the Apple store and according to critics, customers have been hit in the pocket because the withdrawal of chargers and airpods were not met with a reduction in price. In fact, some iPhone models even got pricier.
Experts believe that Apple could be saving ~RM148 on each iPhone. Since removing the chargers and EarPods from the box, Apple have sold around 190 million iPhones worldwide.
If you combine the total gains plus the reduction in shipping costs, Apple could be making as high as RM27 billion. That doesn’t even include the estimated RM12.3 billion that the company makes by the sale of accessories too.
No wonder all the other tech companies are following in Apple’s footsteps in removing chargers from the box. What do you guys think? Share your thoughts with us in the comments below and stay tuned to TechNave for all the latest trending tech news such as this!
