Apple may only be putting an under-display fingerprint sensor on the iPhone in 2025

Reliable tipster on everything relating to AppleMing-Chi Kuo is at it again. This time, the serial leaker is spilling the beans on a potential under-display Touch ID on the iPhone.

Previously, Kuo said that an adoption of the technology might be coming in 2023, but it seems that he have retracted that prediction. This is because according to his latest survey, Apple may only be adopting under-display fingerprint sensors in 2025 at the earliest.

Currently, only a few devices from Apple are still using Touch ID, but none of it utilises under-display fingerprint sensors that have become ubiquitous in Android smartphones. First introduced in 2013 by Apple, Touch ID has been discarded from the company’s flagship mobile devices after the introduction of Face ID.

Touch ID did make a comeback with the 2020 iPad Air, whereby a fingerprint sensor is embedded to its power button. Furthermore, the iPhone SE still retains touch ID, though that is mainly due to the device having the exact same body as an iPhone 8 from 2017.

In his tweet, Kuo said that the recent iOS 15.4 update may also be the reason behind Apple not pushing for under-display Touch ID in the iPhone. Previously, many users complained about Face ID not being practical during this Covid-19 pandemic era as people are walking around wearing face masks.

However, with the iOS update allowing for Face ID to be used while wearing a face mask, there is no urgent need for Apple to reintroduce Touch ID on the iPhone. Though, do note that this is mere speculation at this point, so please take the information with a grain of salt.
