Apple set to ‘revolutionise’ tech industry again, may start selling iPhones as a hardware subscription in 2023

Apple is reportedly set to ‘revolutionise’ the tech industry once again next year by changing how hardware will be sold. According to a Bloomberg report by Mark Gurman, a reliable leaker on everything Apple, the tech giant is planning to start selling mobile devices through a hardware subscription service.

These include a subscription service for the iPhone and iPad that would require consumers to pay a monthly fee to Apple in order to buy and use the device. Gurman claimed that this service is Apple’s biggest push into automatically recurring sales other than its current digital services.

Speaking of the latter, Apple has already been pushing recurring subscription services to consumers for the past few years. These include Apple TV Plus, Apple Music, Apple News Plus, Apple Arcade and more.

The Bloomberg report further claimed that Apple will be charging a monthly charge similar to the specific device’s price divided by either 12 or 24 months, depending on the package picked. Furthermore, the service may also have the option to upgrade to next-gen devices as they are released.

While Gurman has been right consistently in the past, do take these information with a grain of salt as nothing is confirmed as of yet. However, if these plans turn out to be true, it would potentially be replicated by other major tech companies like most of Apple's previous moves such as the removal of the headphone jack and charger in the box.

Nevertheless, the whole thing looks like an interesting concept which is quite practical too. I mean, many Malaysians are already purchasing iPhones through monthly instalments, so why not just cut the middleman and pay monthly directly to Apple?
