Apple tested under-display fingerprint sensors, but won't use it for iPhone 13

Earlier this year, rumours claimed that Touch ID might make a return to the iPhone. Apple was granted a patent for an under-display Touch ID and has likely been testing it in the last few months. However, we might not get it this year after all.

A report last month suggested that Apple won't be launching the iPhone 13 series with Touch ID this year. According to Mark Gurman (via MacRumors), Apple has been testing under-display fingerprint sensors for Touch ID on iPhones. However, the sensors "won't make the cut". The exact reason wasn't mentioned, but this could be due to performance issues or difficulties in getting it to work with the latest iOS version.

Interesting enough, Apple could look to improve Face ID for iPhones. Gurman claims that Apple's plans to have under-display Face ID as the ultimate goal. If this is true, Apple could just drop the under-display Touch ID completely. Another possibility is that the Touch ID could be integrated into the power button.

So, will the iPhone 13 come with Touch ID or not? Well, we'll find out very soon since the launch is just around the corner. But with that said, what else are you hoping to see from the upcoming iPhone series? Let us know in the comments, and stay tuned to TechNave for further updates.
