Apple to fix the new Studio Display’s disappointing webcam quality with a software update

Just a week after the 27-inch Studio Display was released by Apple, users are already complaining about the monitor’s lacklustre webcam quality. Most of the criticism came from reviewers who got their hands on the product a little earlier than the public.

Following the complaints, Apple has since released a statement saying that the monitor’s camera is ‘not behaving as expected’. Furthermore, as reported by Input, Apple stressed that a software update is currently in the works to fix the issue, though no release date has been given just yet.

The Studio Display is a monitor intended for professionals that supports 5K resolution that is priced at RM6999 for its standard glass version and RM8299 for the Nano-texture glass version. It is even powered by Apple’s A13 Bionic chipset found inside its older iPhones for improved performance, including for improved imaging for the monitor’s webcam that supports the Centre Stage feature.

With that in mid, the lacklustre webcam quality as shared in the Studio Display’s reviews by The Verge,The Wall Street Journal and other publications make it the more surprising. Theoretically, the 12-megapixel webcam should be performing well with improved image quality thanks to the A13 chip.

Most of the reviews however said that the image quality is washed-out, noisy and didn’t look great in FaceTime or Zoom. Some even claimed that the quality is worse than the selfie camera on the iPhone 11 Pro which has the same A13 processor and Megapixel count.

Therefore, it is most likely that the problem is with software rather than the webcam’s hardware. Let’s hope that it would be fixed soon as consumers definitely won’t be happy with a mediocre webcam on an RM6999 monitor meant for professionals.
