Shanghai Zhaoxin Semiconductor Co recently revealed that their 16nm KX-6000 and KH-30000 x86 CPUs have hit 3.0GHz, which is about the same level as an Intel Core i5-7400 CPU. No actual news whether or not they could be used in Huawei’s upcoming MateBook laptops, but taking a look through the Shanghai Zhaoxin Semiconductor Co site reveals that their x86 CPUs have been featured in actual Lenovo laptops and servers. So, if Huawei is looking for CPU alternatives they may not have to look very far.
The recent China-US trade war and placement of Huawei on the US Entity list has largely seemed to accelerate development of non-US technology, as evidenced by the Shanghai Zhaoxin Semiconductor Co CPUs above and Huawei's upcoming Hongmeng / ARK OS. In the days to come, we expect more such non-US tech achievements to happen, perhaps eventually culminating in laptops, smartphones and other tech devices made completely from non-US tech. On the other hand, US tech firms like Apple are also looking for non-China alternatives (like Malaysia).
While this growing digital divide seems alarming, more competition generally means more alternatives and options for customers (also, hopefully cheaper prices). Malaysian tech companies could also stand to gain much if they position themselves carefully enough. What do you guys think? Interesting times, right?
