At the Consumer Electronics Show this year, AMD announced that it will be launching laptops equipped with the new Mobile Ryzen 4000 series chips. The Ryzen 7 4800H is supposed to be the highest performer and now we have a leak comparing benchmarks scores for the chip, compared to a few others.
In a tweet by leakster APISAK, the Ryzen 7 4800H got a CPU score of 8350 on 3DMark's Time Spy benchmark. As a reminder, the Time Spy benchmark will show scores for GPU and CPU. To have AMD's chip beat even an Intel i7-9700K (score of 8200) here is a good indication that the CPU can perform better. Another benchmark posted on Twitter by _rogame shows similar scores, except against two other setups and with more detail.

Of course, it should be noted that the margin over the i7-9700K isn't large and it's possible that the score for the Intel chip is before overclocking. A desktop CPU will have more headroom for that so its scores could be higher than depicted. There are also things that APISAK's leak doesn't mention, such as differences in thermal performance.
Regardless, it's great to see AMD's mobile CPU do so well and it gives us hope of seeing really affordable gaming PCs. For now, all we can do is wait for the machines announced at CES to launch before we make any conclusions. Having said that, are you keen on getting an AMD-based laptop this year?
