A judge in Brazil has ordered Apple to compensate ~RM4609 to a customer in Goiânia who recently purchased an iPhone. The Brazilian court found that Apple violated consumer law for the practice, which began with the iPhone 12.

In the verdict, the judge quoted Article 39 of Brazil’s Consumer Code (CDC) which said that by selling the phone and charger separately, Apple is practicing a ‘tie sale’. Such a practice is considered abusive and prohibited in the country.

The sitting judge, Vanderlei Caires Pinheiro, of the 6th Civil Court of Goiânia then ordered Apple to compensate the customer with ~RM4609. It is not known whether Apple will appeal the verdict or which iPhone model was the subject of the civil suit.

Nevertheless, the court ruling is the latest legal trouble that Apple has faced in Brazil for not including a charger with the iPhone. Last year, the tech giant was infamously fined ~RM8.5 million for violating consumer law and ‘disrespecting’ Brazilian customers.
