Breeze through airport gates with AirAsia's facial recognition boarding passes

Boarding passes will soon be a thing of the past with AirAsia’s FACES feature. FACES is a facial recognition system which uses your physical face to replace boarding passes which is honestly a blessing when you're someone forgetful like me. And it reduces paper waste (yay for saving the environment!).

As of right now, you can register your face on the AirAsia app. All you have to do is head on over to your profile, tap on “My FACES” and record a short video of your face before you scan your passport. Once done, just head on over to any AirAsia ground staff and they will verify your face and passport information. You only have to do this once before you can breeze through airport gates worry free.

According to CEO of AirAsia, Tony Fernandez, this feature is currently only focused in the Senai Airport in Johor and will hopefully roll out to other airports in Malaysia soon. I know what you’re thinking - how efficient is the facial recognition system. AirAsia claims that the process has a 98% success rate which is pretty impressive. Not going to lie though, with my luck, I’m probably the 2% of users who wouldn’t be properly recognized.

As of right now, Grab is utilizing a similar method in weeding out fake Grab accounts from real ones in order to protect its drives and riders and Penang is currently the first state in Malaysia to utilize facial recognition to track down criminals. While everyone screams on about conspiracy theories that the government is out to steal our identities and spy on us, I truly believe that this system is here to make our lives more convenient and better.
