Based on an article titled “Malaysia’s need for speed: How regulatory action is unleashing ultrafast internet” in the World Bank report, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) was commended in their efforts to increase the average broadband speeds in Malaysia. Not only that, but they have also managed to reduce the average price by up to 49% for these services.

The Mandatory Standard on Access Pricing (MSAP) which was implemented by MCMC in October 2018, has effectively reduced the prices of Malaysia’s broadband subscription services down to as low as RM79 while providing up to 3 times the broadband speed. Ever since the introduction of MSAP, as well as the National Fiberisation and Connectivity Plan (NFCP), Malaysia’s average broadband speeds shot up from 22.5 Mbps to 68.5 Mbps on average. To put things into perspective, the global average broadband speeds currently sits at 59.6 Mbps.

Telekom Malaysia also played a huge role in bumping up the nation’s average broadband speeds, by increasing the bandwidth of existing Unifi subscribers by up to 10 times at no additional cost.
