E-scooters are not banned yet, DBKL conducting study on allowing usage in KL

In December 2020, e-scooter owners and businesses weren't that happy to hear that the PDRM will take legal action against e-scooters on the roads on 1 January 2021. Despite that, DBKL has not ruled out in the usage of the electronic vehicle yet as they are still doing a survey.

At the moment, a small task force is currently collecting information and data from various government agencies on whether e-scooters can be still allowed within Kuala Lumpur. This was initiated by Mayor Datuk Mahadi Che Ngah as he said the study is crucial now and the result would be made known to the public in mid-January. He also mentioned that e-scooters should still be allowed in public parks and shopping centres.

In addition, he also revealed that a few e-scooter companies have asked DBKL for permission to be used at designated areas and zones. DBKL also didn't want to repeat the mistake they did before with oBike which was closed "without thinking things through first". Previously, DBKL partnered with oBike during the 2017 SEA Games and ASEAN Para Games but turned out to be a logistical failure to collect back abandoned bicycles.

Depending on the data collection, the Mayor said DBKL will then make a decision soon. If they agree to go ahead, then there will be restrictions or conditions so that e-scooter owners won't interfere with the police's ban. Until then, stay tuned for more trending tech news at TechNave.com.
