Yesterday, Facebook Messenger had an update that trimmed the fat of the app in various areas. Now, we have a little more detail as to what was done on the development side. Facebook has revealed that the Messenger app for iOS is now twice as fast and is 84% smaller than the previous version.

Prior to the redesign, it was quite clear that Facebook intended for its Messenger app to be an all-in-one platform that provides a variety of features. But as Raymond Endres (VP of Engineering, Messenger) explained, the app became harder to navigate and the architecture more complex as development progressed. As a result, Facebook worked on reducing the app from over 1.7 million lines of codes to 360000 lines - a massive reduction in the size of the iOS app.

According to Endres, the improved iOS version of Messenger will be rolled out to users gradually over the coming weeks and will feature the same changes that are already found on the Android version of the app. You should now only see two tabs for Chat and People, with the latter being divided into Stories and Active tabs. Facebook also mentioned that some of the features that have been removed could make a comeback in the future.

Some of the iOS users on our team have already gotten the updated version on their iPhones, so the new version should already be available in the Malaysian Apple App Store. For those who have already updated to the new version, what are your impressions of it so far? Is it faster and easier to use?
