Facebook might have to pay ~RM83 million to become Meta

Remember Facebook's decision to rebrand last week? CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that the company will be known as 'Meta' going forward, but things might not be as easy as he hoped. Moreover, it might end up being more expensive than expected.

According to TMZ (via AppleInsider), there's already a company named Meta in the US and it has been operating for about a year. This company dealt with computer goods and services, which include notebooks and servers. But on 23 August 2021, it registered for a trademark to the name 'Meta'.

The trademark filing in question

The trademark hasn't been granted yet, but Meta's founders are willing to drop the petition for a price. They are asking for Facebook and Zuckerberg to fork out USD20 million (~RM83 million), as that's how much it's deemed to rebrand their company. Of course, Facebook could still be granted the rights to the 'Meta' name without shelling out the money since the trademark hasn't been granted. But we're not sure how things would go, so don't quote us on that.

Mind you, Facebook (or Meta as it wants to be known) has the money to buy the name and trademark if it has to. But it's somewhat amusing to see that the rebrand wasn't all smooth sailing.
