Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil has announced today that Malaysia’s 5G network has been ranked first for consistency in the world. Scoring an impressive 97.27% by Ookla, read on to find out more.
According to Bernama, Fahmi revealed the achievement at the opening of the Malaysian Pavilion at the MWC 2024 in Barcelona, Spain. Moreover, the Communications Minister lauded the triumph as reaffirming Malaysia’s position as a leading player in the global digital landscape.
The consistency score is an Ookla-specific methodology for measuring speeds. In this metric, a mobile network has to satisfy the criteria of download and upload of 25Mbps and 3Mbps respectively.
For context, this is different from the reliability study conducted OpenSignal which measured every aspect of the user’s experience of their network operator’s mobile data network. These include when it’s working flawlessly, when it’s working erratically and when users can’t connect at all. Furthermore, do note that OpenSignal didn’t specify whether they were only testing Malaysia’s 5G network or our mobile network offerings as a whole, whereas Ookla only tested our 5G network specifically.
As for the first placement in the Ookla ranking, Fahmi said that this was not just about boasting rights but also about unlocking the full potential of this game-changing technology to drive economic growth, enhance social welfare and foster a more inclusive society. With a robust 5G infrastructure in place, Fahmi said that Malaysia is poised to accelerate innovation across various sectors, from healthcare and education to manufacturing and agriculture, unlocking new opportunities and empowering businesses, entrepreneurs, and individuals alike.
