Previously, we shared how Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil met with Telegram founder and CEO Pavel Durov to discuss issues involving the platform. Now, Fahmi has given an update on the matter, revealing that Telegram is providing good cooperation in supervising the platform against illegal content.

As reported by Bernama, the Communications Minister asserted that Telegram is cooperating well with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) on issues of online security. These include taking down related content or channels that share scams, online gambling and content that infringes the Copyright Act.

However, Fahmi said that one problem that persists is that when one channel is closed, another channel is opened on Telegram. This is especially true for online gambling operators who Fahmi said are often very creative.

Hence, the Communications Ministry is discussing more sustainable ways to combat scams and online gambling. This will not only apply to Telegram but also to many other social media and online messaging applications.
