Flying a drone at the moment might cost you a fortune or send you to jail

Starting from now, you might want to keep your drone away for a while, as flying a drone at this moment could cause you some serious troubles. Today, the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), Air Operation (PGU) Drone Unit chief, Supt Rasha Azaldin Shafii has announced that operating a drone without permission would be illegal from now on until 12 May 2020.

From today onwards, anyone, including media practitioner, flies a drone without obtaining a permit from the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) will be a violation of the Malaysian Civil Aviation Regulations 2016 (MCAR 2016). Doing so, you “may be subject to a minimum fine of RM50,000 or three years' imprisonment for individuals, while corporations may face a maximum fine of RM100,000”.

Throughout the MCO period, there were four cases of illegal drone use occurred nationwide and further investigations on the cases are still going on. Police are also prepared to use drone jammers to ensure no drones are being flown without permission at any location. Earlier, news has reported that the Malaysia Armed Force was going to use flying drones to assist in patrolling the streets during this MCO period. Therefore, flying your drone during this time could also interrupt the operation and cause unwanted troubles.
