The Google Pixel 9 series was finally unveiled and much to our delight, the lineup is also officially available in the Malaysian market. The Google Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro XL's starting prices are at RM3,999 and RM5,699, respectively, and are available on CelcomDigi, Maxis, Lazada, Shopee, Senheng, senQ and Urban Republic.
In terms of design, the Pixel 9 phones have a little change but for the first time, the pro model comes in two different sizes - 6.3 and 6.8 inches for the Pixel 9 Pro (more on that later) and Pixel 9 Pro XL. Both are equipped with Super Actua displays and the front camera is 42MP. Both Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro have a 4,700mAh battery pack, while the Pixel 9 Pro XL sports a 5,060mAh energy juice (all with 45W fast charging speeds). Other than display size, charging speed and power, the Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL share all the same specs and features.
As for the vanilla Pixel 9, it features a 6.3-inch Actua display, while the camera sets get an upgrade when compared with the predecessor. The front camera is just 10.5MP but the dual rear cameras are the same as the pro models, which are 50MP (main) + 48MP (ultrawide). The Pixel 9 Pro XL and Pixel 9 Pro has a 48MP telephoto.
Of course, all the Pixel 9 phones feature the latest Tensor G4 chip and up to 16GB of RAM. Google said the chip was designed with Google DeepMind, optimised to run advanced AI models. It is also the company's first chip to run Gemini Nano with Multimodality which can help the Pixel 9 phones to understand texts, images and audio.
There are a few other AI functions on the Pixel 9 phones, this includes:
- Pixel Studio - An image generator that allows users to change and edit an image's style
- Pixel Screenshots - Helps to save, organize and recall important information
- Pixel Weather - Redesigned with super accurate weather forecasts with the help of Gemini Nano, generating a custom AI weather report
- Magic Editor in Google Photos - New editing capabilities such as Auto frame to better reframe a photo and add new elements to an image
- Clear Calling and Call Notes - Improved audio quality and sends you a private summary and full transcript of your phone call after hanging up, respectively
- Satellite SOS
- Gemini Live is also free to all Gemini Advanced subscribers for a year, including the Pixel 9 phones
Oddly, the Pixel 9 Pro is nowhere to be found on any of the platforms but it will arrive here in September for RM5,199. We were also told that the Pixel 9 Pro Fold will not launch in Malaysia. However, the Malaysian market will definitely see the next-gen Pixel 9 Pro Fold next year. Besides the Pixel 9 phones, Google also released the Google Pixel Watch 3 and Pixel Buds Pro 2 in Malaysia for RM1,849 and RM1,099, respectively.
