Google lowers Play Store fees from 30% to 15% for first ~RM4.12 million earned

Smaller indie devs will get the most benefit

Remember Fortnite getting banned from Apple and Google's app stores? Epic Games may not have won its lawsuit yet, but the company's action has had a clear effect. In fact, Apple reduced its service fee last year and now Google is following suit.

Google has announced that it will reduce the service fee for Google Play Store from 30% to 15%, starting 1 July 2021. This will apply to every developer's first USD 1 million (~RM4.12 million) revenue of the year. However, the fee would return to 30% after that and this will reset the next year.

It should be noted that the ruling applies to developers and not individual apps. This means that developers with multiple apps could hit that threshold faster. Regardless, Google claims that this measure will benefit 99% of Play Store developers. They're expected to enjoy a reduction in fees of around 50%.

This doesn't benefit larger developers, but it's only natural for those that earn more to have higher taxes. With that said, what do you app developers out there think about this? Let us know in the comments below, and stay tuned to TechNave for more news like this.
