After teasing Android 12L last year, Google has finally released the optimised Android 12 version for tablets and foldable display smartphones. However, the official release was a bit awkward, given how there’s no actual tablet or foldable device hardware to run Android 12L on currently.

In an official blogpost by Google last Monday (7 March 2022) written by its VP of Engineering for Android, Andrei Popescu said that Android 12L features a new layout for easier viewing and a taskbar to get more done. Furthermore, the update brings optimised display for the home screen, lock screen, notification shade, device set-up screens, settings and others so that they look better on the bigger screen of tablets and foldables.

Android 12L also moved notifications and quick tiles to their own dedicated columns so that users can have more space to view and swipe away their notifications. There is also a new taskbar to launch and switch between apps for easier multitasking.

Users can also now enter split-screen mode by simply dragging and dropping any app from the taskbar. The settings menu is also updated to a two-column layout similar to what you can see on Apple’s iPads.

Despite Android 12L already being officially released, Google said that the OS will only be available on tablet hardwares ‘later this year’. Among the devices Google announced will get the new OS are tablets and foldables by Lenovo, Samsung and even Microsoft.
