Google planning to add Nearby Sharing to more platforms

Now that Android 11 beta has launched, Android users finally got access to a feature that's similar to Apple's AirDrop - the Nearby Sharing feature. But Google isn't content with just making it usable on mobile. A source has found that Google plans to make the feature available on even more platforms.

According to 9to5Google (via Chrome Story), the setting for Nearby Sharing was found in a Chromebook's settings. Besides Chromebooks, the feature is also expected to be available in Windows, Mac, and Linux via the Google Chrome browser. The feature is currently still in testing for other platforms, so you'll need the latest version of Chrome Canary and then enable the feature in chrome://flags.

If you're unfamiliar with Nearby Sharing, it's a feature that allows you to quickly transfer files between devices via Bluetooth. Once the Chrome OS or Chrome browser gets access to this feature, it'll allow users to do such file transfers between the different platforms. Unfortunately, it seems that the cross-platform compatibility is still a work-in-progress.

Hopefully, Google would be able to complete this soon. That way, we won't have to plug our phone to PCs via USB for file transfers anymore. Having said that, what do you think? Would this feature be useful for you? Let us know on our Facebook page and stay tuned to TechNave.com for more news.
