Google reducing its Play Store fees to 15% for Android developers

Last month, the US courts finally released their ruling on the Epic Games vs Apple saga. The final result? Neither side came out with a solid win. Apple is trying to appeal the ruling as expected, but Google seems to be taking a step back with its service fees instead.

In an official announcement, Google confirmed that it will be making adjustments to its Play Store business model. Specifically, the company will be reducing its service fee for paid apps or apps with in-app purchases from 30% to 15%. This change will go into effect beginning 1 January 2022.

Note that Android developers can get a reduction to 15% even with the current terms and conditions. However, that's only possible after 12 months of continuous subscription. To add to that, Google is also reducing the service fee for media on the Google Play Store. The Media Experience program previously charged 15% for content like ebooks and music, but this would be reduced to 10% next year.

Google is hosting an Android Developer Summit from 27 to 28 October 2021, so we can expect further details then. To those who are Android developers here, are the changes enough to make Google Play Store a fair platform for developers?
