Apple has long been rumoured to be working on its very own AR/VR headset, with the operating system already allegedly having a name, xrOS. Now, based on claims by industry insiders, it looks like the tech giant is ready to announce the mixed-reality headset as early as the first half of this year.

This is according to the famed tipster on everything Apple, Mark Gurman. Writing in his latest Power On newsletter on Bloomberg, Gurman claimed that Apple intends to announce the AR/VR headset before WWDC 2023 this June.

Moreover, he said that the mixed-reality headset would then be available for purchase in September 2023. Gurman elaborated that prototype hardware for the headset has already been seeded to a small number of developers for testing.

What’s left is for Apple to iron out several ‘kinks’ in the hardware and software side of the product. The move to announce it prior to WWDC is also significant, as it would allow Apple to provide test kits to developers intending to create apps for the headset, thus making it a more polished product with readily available apps when it launches in September.

Of course, do take this information with a grain of salt as nothing is confirmed as of yet. Well, we just have to wait a few more months to find out for sure.
