HONOR took the stage yesterday at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2023 in Barcelona to release its Magic5 series and Magic Vs for the global market. During the presentation, HONOR CEO George Zhao also revealed a new silicon-carbon battery technology that provides a higher energy density.

The first of its kind in the industry, Zhao asserted that the battery technology offers 12.8 per cent higher energy density compared to current lithium batteries. As reported by GSMArena, the silicon-carbon battery has 240 per cent more capacity left at 3.5V than a lithium battery.

The higher energy density means that silicon-carbon batteries would have a larger capacity than lithium batteries while remaining the same size. For example, the Magic5 Pro’s 51000mAh battery would have a 5450mAh battery if it uses silicon-carbon instead of lithium.

In fact, the Magic5 Pro variant in China actually sports a 5450mAh battery instead of the 5100mAh battery found in the global version despite it being the same smartphone. Hence, it is possible that HONOR has already implemented the technology with the Chinese variant of the Magic5 Pro.

Well, let’s see how this technology would be improved and adopted by the smartphone industry in the future. If it becomes ubiquitous and provides better battery life, then we’re all up for it!
