Back in May, it was announced that both Facebook and Instagram were planning to build an Instagram Kids app version. However, it was met with some concerns from several parties including lawmakers and child specialists. This eventually led to a pause in the project.
In the Facebook newsroom, Head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri officially stated that the team is pausing the work and use the time to work with parents, experts and policymakers. While we don't know how long it will take, Instagram will demonstrate to the parties the "value and need" of Instagram Kids.
Mosseri also argued that in this modern-day, most children already have access to the internet (which is true) and the company believes that developing an age-appropriate app experience for them is beneficial. For example, there are already YouTube Kids and Zigazoo (TikTok for kids) for minors under 13 years old. That said, Instagram Kids was planned for tweens aged between 10 to 12.
We’re pausing “Instagram Kids.” This was a tough decision. I still think building this experience is the right thing to do, but we want to take more time to speak with parents and experts working out how to get this right. pic.twitter.com/gMbPjft0CW

In addition, Mosseri also mentioned that Instagram Kids will still need parental permission to join the app. Unlike Instagram, there won't be any ads, followed by supervision from their parents on time spent on the app and who is messaging them. All in all, Instagram Kids is designed to be a safe place with age-appropriate content and features.
