The Ministry of Communications and Digital (KKD) has instructed all telco companies in Malaysia to block any URL links in short message services (SMS). The directive, made through the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) was to ensure that no malicious URL is being spread that would possibly make people become victims of scams.

According to Bernama, KKD Deputy Minister Teo Nie Ching elaborated that the directive would be implemented in phases. Furthermore, she hoped that telco companies would be able to implement it soon.

The KKD Deputy Minister added that several online scams happen when people click on the wrong link. Moreover, they might end up being scammed after giving personal information through phishing websites that the URLs redirect to.

In relation to that, KKD had previously announced that it will be calling up Telegram to discuss the issue of scammers on the platform. The ministry also revealed that 800,000 attempted cyberattacks were recorded in our country from 2017 to 2021.
