Gaming phones have been declining in recent years, with brands shifting away from gaming aesthetics toward mainstream designs. Even ASUS has stopped making new ROG gaming phones. Funny enough, Lenovo is making a return to the gaming phones scene.
Return of Legion phones
Yesterday, Lenovo announced that a new Lenovo Legion phone will debut in May 2026. This is the company's first gaming smartphone since the Lenovo Legion Y70, which launched back in August 2022. The company didn't reveal too many details of the new phone, but confirmed that it will use AI to be a "reliable partner". This could refer to AI features that directly enhance game performance and visuals, or some AI assistant designed to help in mobile games.
Testing the waters again
Although Lenovo hasn't released any gaming phones in four years, it has released new gaming tablets and handheld gaming consoles. These include the Legion Y700 tablet and Legion Go 2 handheld. But according to Lenovo, the company also regularly receive feedback and comments asking for a new Legion gaming phone.
Clearly, there is enough demand for Lenovo to consider releasing a gaming phone this year. However, whether Lenovo can sell enough units to justify releasing more future models remains questionable, especially in a year when the DRAM shortage is causing flagship smartphone prices to increase.
