Previously, we reported that all airlines in Malaysia must provide mandatory full refunds to passengers of flights delayed by 5 hours or more. Now, the Malaysian Aviation Commission (MAVCOM) has iterated that refunds must include any carbon fee charges and be made through the original mode of payment.
Moreover, Bernama reported that the final Malaysian Aviation Consumer Protection Code 2016 (MACPC) mandates that airlines must issue refunds to consumers in the original mode of payment within 30 days. As for carbon fees, currently, only Malaysia Airlines has embarked on a voluntary carbon offset programme.
MAVCOM Director of Consumer and Public Affairs Puspalatha Subramaniam clarified that the commission doesn’t regulate the carbon offset programme, and it is up to the carriers to decide whether to impose it and to determine its value. Regardless, if airlines impose the charges, the charges must be refunded to customers too, regardless of whether it’s a refundable or non-refundable ticket.
