The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) have called up TikTok Malaysia’s management to explain 3 provocative videos on the platform that can be seditious and incite disharmony. The videos, which have a ‘paid partnership’ tag to them warned of the recurrence of the 13 May 1969 riots in Malaysia

In a statement yesterday, MCMC said that it will continue to monitor the circulation of the provocative TikTok videos. Moreover, in collaboration with PDRM, the commission will also increase efforts to curb the spread of such videos.

MCMC stressed that the spreading of such video content is an “irresponsible act which is feared to cause disharmony, division, feelings of hatred or prejudice in matters related to religion and race”. Such provocative content is also an offence under Act 574 of the Penal Code, which can result in a fine or imprisonment or both if convicted.

MCMC made the statement following a news report by a local media which pointed out that the TikTok videos had the ‘paid partnership’ tag to them. Previously, we reported that TikTok is working with MCMC to remove hate speech content on the platform after the 15th General Election (GE15)
