It has been long overdue in choosing a second 5G network provider but here we are. Just before the end of Friday last week, the Malaysian government selected U Mobile as Malaysia's second 5G network provider. Below is the official statement provided by U Mobile.
U Mobile expresses its heartfelt gratitude to the Malaysian government for selecting the company to implement the nation’s Second 5G Network.
We are excited to collaborate with various stakeholders, including MCMC and other telecommunications companies such as CelcomDigi and Telekom Malaysia to deliver world-class 5G-Advanced services to consumers. U Mobile has been proactively engaging with leading global technology providers including Huawei, with whom we have had a long and enduring partnership. U Mobile will also be working with DNB to ensure consumers continue to enjoy the best 5G experience.
In alignment with our commitment to the national agenda, U Mobile will reduce its foreign majority shareholding to 20%, ensuring greater Malaysian control and inviting participation from local investors.
With a proven track record spanning more than 17 years, U Mobile is well-positioned for the Second 5G Network rollout. Our dedication to accessible and innovative services has earned us numerous accolades, including being named ‘Malaysia Mobile Services Company of the Year’ by Frost & Sullivan six times. U Mobile has also been recognised for offering the fastest overall internet speeds in Malaysia. Currently, U Mobile subscribers consume the most 5G capacity in the country as compared to other service providers.
Our continuous investment in network expansion has allowed us to be the first in the country to provide unlimited data. U Mobile is committed to replicating our success for years to come.
The announcement certainly got a lot of comments from the public, particularly CelcomDigi and Maxis. You can read their official response regarding the matter below.
