MCMC has blocked 2.6 billion scam calls as of September 2023

Previously, we reported on the number of scam-related media blocked by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) this year. Now, further details regarding the scourge of scams in Malaysia have been revealed and the action taken against them, this time regarding scam calls. 

As reported by Bernama, Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Ramkarpal Singh in the Dewan Rakyat today revealed that a total of 2.6 billion suspected scam calls have been blocked by MCMC as of September 2023. Furthermore, through cooperation with the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC), the commission also blocked phone numbers used by scammers.

Ramkarpal said that from October 2022 to August 2023, 1732 cases were received and referred to MCMC. Moreover, 134 phone numbers were terminated due to involvement in fraudulent activities, with 21 suspicious numbers blocked. 

Besides that, the Deputy Minister also asserted that Malaysia recorded 19222 scam cases involving losses exceeding RM687 million from January to 30 September this year. This was actually a decrease from the cases recorded in 2018, which was 25609 and amounting to RM23 billion in losses. 

Meanwhile, from 2021 to July 2023, a total of 183 charges were filed under Section 417 of the Penal Code and 617 individuals were sentenced. During the same period, 22837 charges were made under Section 420 of the Penal Code and 2221 individuals were sentenced,

Ramkarpal also lauded NSRC’s effectiveness, saying that from October 2022 until 30 September this year, it received a total of 53,783 calls, which included reports of scam cases and providing advice to the public. Furthermore, NSRC was also examining several existing legal provisions that may need to be amended, including the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001.
