The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has been quite busy these past few months. Besides ramping up the social media ban for under-16s by June or July 2026, MCMC has been stepping up efforts to curb harmful online content, with new figures revealing a sharp volume of takedown requests submitted in just the first few months of the year.

Majority of Reports Linked to Scams and Gambling

So far, MCMC has received 203918 public requests for content removal between 1 January and 19 April 2026. According to Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil, about 91% of these requests were related to online gambling and scam content, highlighting the scale of digital threats facing users today. The takedown requests were directed at various social media platforms, as authorities continue working with tech companies to remove harmful or illegal content more quickly.

The large number of requests also underscores the growing role of public participation in monitoring online spaces. Users are increasingly flagging suspicious or harmful content, particularly scams that target vulnerable individuals.

Ongoing Efforts to Strengthen Digital Safety

The surge in takedown requests highlights the scale of Malaysia’s ongoing battle against online fraud and illegal activities. With scams and gambling forming the bulk of reported content, enforcement efforts are expected to remain focused on these areas throughout the year.

As digital platforms continue to evolve, regulators and users alike are expected to play a more active role in maintaining a safer online environment. Stay safe and stay tuned for more trending tech news at TechNave.com.
