Looks like the full implementation of the early window could come true. Malaysia is close to completing the rollout of electronic Know Your Customer verification, or eKYC, as part of broader efforts to improve online safety and digital identity verification. According to Bernama, engagement sessions with industry players are now almost complete, signalling that implementation is entering its final stages.
Strong Push From Government and Regulators
Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said the initiative is being coordinated by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), which is working closely with stakeholders to finalise the framework. Under the proposed system, identity verification will rely on official credentials such as Malaysia’s MyKad, passports, and the national digital identity platform, MyDigital ID.
One of the key drivers behind eKYC implementation is the need to better regulate children’s access to social media and digital services. Authorities have indicated that stricter verification could play a role in limiting underage account creation and improving accountability across platforms.
Final Phase Before Rollout
With engagement sessions nearing completion, Malaysia is now moving toward the final phase of implementation. While a full rollout timeline has not been explicitly confirmed, the progress suggests that eKYC could be introduced in the near term as part of the country’s broader digital governance strategy.
Previously, the Malaysian government was targeting by July to implement the social media ban for those under 16. However, the latest news reports that it could be done in June. With this, the rollout could come way sooner than we expected. Stay tuned for more trending tech news at TechNave.com.
