Despite the announcement that Malaysia will transition to a dual-5G network after reaching 80 per cent coverage in populated areas (which was achieved in December 2023), the policy has been delayed with no clear timeframe given by the Government. Well, if the Kenanga Investment Bank Bhd (Kenanga IB) is to be believed, the dual-5G network is expected to be announced by the government in the 2nd quarter of this year.

As reported by Bernama, the research house in a note today said that the announcement is also expected to clarify the final equity stakes for each telco in either entity A or B. For reference, these entities will be established as part of Malaysia’s transition from the 5G single wholesale network model to a dual-network one.

Kenanga IB further asserted that Entity A would assume control of the existing 5G network owned by Digital Nasional Bhd (DNB), while Entity B would develop the new 2nd 5G network. With that in mind, the research house also anticipated telcos to explore ways to monetise 5G in order to provide support to weak average revenue per user (ARPU) trends.
