Previously, we reported on the meeting between Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, SpaceX and Starlink. Following the virtual meeting, Anwar has since announced that the government is buying 40 Starlink internet devices for use in learning institutions in our country.

According to FMT, the 40 Starlink internet devices will be used in universities, colleges and schools across Malaysia. The Prime Minister asserted that while the devices are small, they can transform a slow internet connection into a fast one immediately.

Furthermore, if there’s no internet access, the devices can enable it as they communicate directly with satellites. Anwar said that Starlink can also be used to generally improve internet coverage in rural areas. However, the devices would be installed at learning institutions that need them most first before any future implementation plans.

Starlink is one of Musk’s companies, which works hand-in-hand with his other endeavour, SpaceX. It enables satellite communication from SpaceX which provides internet access through the SpaceX constellation of satellites in low-earth orbit.

It would essentially allow for internet connection at places without fibre optic or telco coverage. Imagine it something like Apple’s satellite SOS communication but on steroids.
