Meta to test premium subscriptions across Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp

It was only yesterday when we reported about WhatsApp potentially launching an ad-free subscription feature. However, that's just the tip of the iceberg, as Meta is reportedly planning to roll out premium subscription options to Facebook and Instagram as well.

According to Meta, these subscriptions will offer users access to additional features designed to enhance productivity, creativity and artificial intelligence capabilities, while the essential free experience of each app remains intact. The company also confirmed to TechCrunch that it will test a variety of subscription features and bundles, with each app offering its own distinct set of premium tools, although still in the exploratory phase and details may vary as testing progresses.

Exclusive and Enhanced Features for Subscribers

Instagram’s premium plan is expected to include features such as unlimited audience lists, insights into followers who do not follow back, and the ability to view Stories without alerting the poster, according to reports. These additions are framed as productivity and social management enhancements that go beyond standard functionality.

Meta is also planning to test premium access to certain AI-powered experiences. One of the highlighted offerings is Vibes, an AI-driven short-form video creation and remixing feature that has been available for free but is shifting toward a freemium model. Under the new system, users will be able to generate a limited number of videos at no cost, with subscriptions unlocking additional creation capacity.

While Meta has not yet released specifics for what WhatsApp and Facebook subscriptions might include, the company suggests that features will be tailored to the way users connect, communicate and share content on those platforms.

Manus AI Integration and Business Plans

A significant part of Meta’s subscription strategy involves integrating Manus, an AI agent acquired by the company for approximately $2 billion in late 2025, into its suite of products. Meta plans to build Manus capabilities directly into its apps and also offer standalone business subscriptions that leverage the technology.

Early indicators of this integration have already been spotted in app code. This dual approach reflects Meta’s intent to blend advanced AI tools with social media usage, positioning subscriptions as a way to monetise features that go beyond traditional advertising revenue.

Subscription Strategy That Complements Meta Verified

Meta has clarified that the new premium subscriptions will be separate from Meta Verified, its existing paid service focused on status, support and protection for creators and businesses. While Meta Verified includes benefits like a verified badge, direct support and impersonation protection, the upcoming subscriptions are aimed at a broader audience, including everyday users who want additional functionality without professional verification.

A Shift Toward Diversified Revenue

If successful, these premium plans could reshape how social networking apps balance free core services with paid enhancements, potentially influencing monetisation strategies across the broader tech industry.
