Earlier today, the Minister of Communications and Multimedia, Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah, has sparked a conversation among Malaysians by his speech regarding the National Film Development Corporation (FINAS) Act. It was announced that anyone who makes "films" should apply for license before distributing them for public view. Since the definition of "films" hasn't been clarified enough, the minister has shared a statement on social media to explain further about it.
In his statement, the minister mentioned that the Finas Act that was passed by the Parliament back in 1981 hasn't been revised until now. Back then, social media including TikTok and YouTube hadn't even come into the scene yet. Therefore, his intention was merely to bring improvements to the law rather than restricting the personal freedom of individuals in social media.

He also stated that the FINAS Act has been effective even when we were under the previous governments including Barisan Nasional and Pakatan Harapan. With that said, the current minister hopes to improve the laws to be in line with current needs. At last, he mentioned that it is welcome for the public to provide any suggestions not only about this act but also other laws as well for making improvements.
