As the Malaysian government targets 15 million new MyDigital ID registrations during 2026, it seems that bank users will be part of it. According to this news source, 18 banking institutions in Malaysia have confirmed their participation in Phase 2 of the MyDigital ID sandbox. This phase focuses on testing e-verification technology designed to securely confirm a user’s identity when opening new accounts or conducting real-time banking operations.

The sandbox initiative is carried out jointly by MyDigital ID Sdn Bhd and Bank Negara Malaysia, with oversight from the Ministry of Finance to ensure the system’s security, privacy, and governance frameworks are robust and aligned with international standards.

E-Verification Technology Under Evaluation

The Phase 2 sandbox programme is currently underway, with 10 of the participating banks actively integrating the MyDigital ID e-verification technology and two completing the process. The sandbox is scheduled to run until March 2026, after which a wider implementation may be considered based on the readiness of individual banks and financial service providers.

The core of the testing phase is aimed at refining methods for secure identity checks that could replace traditional manual know-your-customer procedures, potentially reducing fraud and improving the user experience in digital banking interactions.

Building Trust and Security for Broader Deployment

In addition to supporting e-KYC processes to prevent fraud, the Phase 2 sandbox seeks to validate compliance with personal data protection standards and security certifications across the participating institutions. The Ministry of Finance has stressed the need for high levels of readiness before any full nationwide rollout can begin.

Phase 1 of the sandbox, which concluded in June 2025, involved 15 banks and saw several institutions complete integration and e-KYC testing, laying important groundwork for the current phase of evaluations.

What This Means for Digital Identity in Malaysia

The ongoing sandbox tests are part of Malaysia’s broader push toward a secure and reliable digital identity infrastructure. If successful, MyDigital ID could streamline online identity verification across banking services and beyond, potentially improving user convenience and reducing onboarding friction.

As the sandbox progresses toward its conclusion in March 2026, stakeholders in both the tech and financial sectors will be watching closely to see how e-verification scales and what standards are adopted for broader deployment. Stay tuned for more trending tech news at TechNave.com.
