What's a way companies can force people to pay more for services? Either increase prices or remove cheaper subscription options. The first happened with the Xbox PC Game Pass, while Netflix is taking the second option.
According to GSMArena, Netflix plans to discontinue the Basic tier subscription plana in the US and France. The announcement was made during the company's Q2 earnings report, so we can assume it's true. Existing subscribers will either have to upgrade to the Standard plan, which costs USD15.49/month in the US, or downgrade to the new USD6.99/month ad-supported.
For those unaware, the Basic tier was the cheapest ad-free plan available to subscribers. Malaysians enjoy this at a much more affordable rate of RM28/month. However, Netflix may eventually phase out the Basic plan and introduce the ad-supported one in Malaysia. That means we either upgrade to the RM45/month Standard plan or downgrade to the ad-supported plan, which hasn't been introduced here.
Honestly, being plagued by ads on Netflix isn't something I want to experience. Of course, this wouldn't be an issue if you're subscribed to the Mobile, Standard, or Premium plans. Having said that, which Netflix plan are you using? Let us know in the comments and stay tuned to TechNave for more news like this.
