In addition to the newly announced Google Photo fee charge in 2021, Google also announced a new update to storage policies for both Gmail and Google Drive. So if you're a Google user, pay attention because this is going to be important!

Like Google Photo, changes will be coming to your Google Account which includes Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drawings, Forms and Jamboard files on 1 June 2021. So at the moment, all your existing files that are in these services will be counted as part of the storage, not until you modify them on or after 1 June 2021. Unfortunately, this applies the same to your WhatsApp backup files as well if they are connected to your Google Account.

If you happen to be inactive in one or more of these Google services for the past 2 years, Google will delete any content that is in there. This applies the same to your storage if it is over the limit. However, the company will notify you first before they will take any action in removing the files. As long as you visit your Google account from time to time, then it shall be counted as active.

If you have some more questions, you can visit Google's Help Center here to understand the situation. Likewise, Google Workspace subscribers, and G Suite for Education and G Suite for Nonprofits customers should refer to their Google Workspace Updates post to understand how these changes may affect them.
