New real-time transcription feature for Google Translate coming to Android

Google really has been hard at work on the translation front lately. Just last month, the company added Google Assistant Interpreter Mode to Android and iOS. Now, Google wants to add a live transcription feature for Google Translate to Android, one that uses the power of artificial intelligence (AI).

This feature is still in the works but Google already has a prototype for it. The company demoed the prototype during a presentation at its San Fransisco office recently, showing its capabilities in listening to a spoken language, then translating it to another in real-time. According to CNET, the new feature is currently being tested in a few languages, such as French, German, and Spanish. Also, an internet connection will be required for it to work, at least for now.

As it is using AI, Google will probably need some time to train the system to give accurate translations. Currently, it will only accept voice or audio captured live, which means you won't be able to upload recorded ones. This is certainly going to be very useful since Google Translate's accuracy still isn't all that good, but we're unlikely to see the feature launched too soon. However, there's a good chance that Google will have it ready within 2020.

This live translation feature is actually quite similar to the Google Assistant version already announced. Of course, it has the potential to be way more accurate thanks to the use of AI.
