During the announcement of the Nintendo Switch 2, the company did not reveal what kind of processor it was using. Even the official website simply mentions "custom processor by NVIDIA". Well, NVIDIA has shed more light on the processor's capabilities.
As you should already know, the Switch 2 is capable of playing select games with up to a 120Hz refresh rate at 1080p in handheld mode. At the same time, it can also boost up to 4K resolution in TV mode at 60 FPS. According to NVIDIA, the new custom processor features an NVIDIA GPU with dedicated RT Cores and Tensor Cores.
The new RT Cores offer real-time ray tracing, while Tensor Cores power AI-driven features like Deep Learning Super Sampling, boosting resolution for sharper details without sacrificing image quality. It can also enable AI-powered face tracking and background removal in video chat use cases, which should complement the new GameChat feature on the Switch 2.
Compared to the Nintendo Switch, NVIDIA said the Switch 2 has 10x the graphics performance, thanks to the high dynamic range and AI upscaling of the custom NVIDIA processor. With the Switch 2, NVIDIA also said developers can get improved game engines, better physics and optimized APIs for faster, more efficient game creation.
