Nothing's AI-powered Essential Apps is now available in beta

When Nothing first announced Essential Apps in October last year, many would have wondered what the point was. The Essential Apps aims to offer deeper integration of AI features and apps in Nothing devices. Some users, with access to the alpha testing phase in December 2025, got a glimpse of what was offered. But more users can test it during beta testing this February 2026.

Essential Apps beta

Yesterday, Nothing announced that Essential Apps is now in the beta testing stage. It will be available to beta users on a waitlist, with more receiving access in future batches. Still not sure what the Essential Apps do? Essentially (pun intended), a phone with Essential Apps can create apps for your specific needs.

As Nothing described it, "What if you could describe what you need and the app simply appears on your home screen, ready to use?" The idea is to allow users to send prompts to the OS, which then generates apps or widgets. Of course, you'll need the Essential Apps Builder found inside the Nothing's Playground, which is a repository of Essential Apps, Glyph Toys, and more.

For instance, you can ask for an app that can suggest the best time to train, based on given parameters. As you can see from the screenshot, the Builder takes prompts in plain language. Mind, what the Builder can build is currently limited. That's because it only has access to Location, Calendar (read-only), and Contacts. In other words, you can't ask it to apps or widgets that require access to the camera or microphone.

Debuting with Nothing Phone 4a?

Considering the timing, the Essential Apps could debut in the Nothing Phone 4a launching this year. Also, Nothing has confirmed that the Essential Apps beta will be available on other Nothing and CMF devices with Nothing OS 4.0 and above. Currently, compatible devices include the following:

  • Nothing Phone (2)
  • Nothing Phone (2a)
  • Nothing Phone (2a) Plus
  • Nothing Phone (3)
  • Nothing Phone (3a)
  • Nothing Phone (3a) Pro
  • CMF Phone 1
  • CMF Phone 2 Pro

Unlike many brands looking to integrate their own AI-powered features or widgets into their devices, Nothing is giving users the option to customise their experience. Which setup is the better one is something only time can tell. But what do you think? Share your thoughts in the comments, and stay tuned to TechNave for more news like this.
