Prior to the new Snapdragon, many people assumed that the chipset would be named as the Snapdragon 875 but it turned out to be 888 instead. According to Qualcomm, the reason why 888 was chosen is that it symbolises luck and prosperity (yep, that's a very Asian thing to do). With that, OnePlus might even hop on the name gimmick for the next flagship.
OnePlus CEO and founder, Liu Zuohu posted on his Weibo account announcing that OnePlus will be celebrating its 8th anniversary and asked the fans who would they feel if there was a OnePlus 888 phone. Perhaps to some, this may sound like a joke but then again, it could very well happen as he hinted not to rule out the possibility of the name. You know, it actually sounds like a plausible idea and they can even make it as an 8th-anniversary phone but we should totally take this with a huge chunk of salt.
By right, the next OnePlus flagship should be the OnePlus 9 series and the Snapdragon 888 chipset is expected to be featured. Very little is known about the next OnePlus flagship but it's rumoured to feature a 6.7-inch AMOLED display with up to 144Hz refresh rate. Besides that, a pair of Dolby Atmos speakers could make their way too but we shall see.
